Bran’s bastard brother, Jon Snow, moved closer.
On my first read, I remember getting a great vibe — a feeling that this book was different from, and ineffably cooler than, fantasy potboilers I’d known — from this line. The matter-of-fact mention of Jon’s bastard status (by a seven-year-old child!), Jon’s simple but awesome-sounding name with its hint of mystery (the bastard surname system is briefly explained a few pages later). (As you’ll learn if for some unfathomable reason you keep reading, I’m not a particular Jon Snow fan, but I do think he’s the best-named character in the series.)
